Retirement

I will soon be retiring from my second career, with time to relax.

16 years since leaving the Dog Section I still have vivid memories of the 'good times' and hope this blog will continue to attract new photographic entries for its history to continue.

Of interest?

Once upon a time, the 1960's to be most accurate, Oldham Borough Police did not have one single police dog.

But very early one morning two dodgy looking young men walked up to the charge desk and stood there without saying a word.

"What do you two want?" said the Sergeant" "We have been arrested," said one of the young men.

Puzzled the Sergeant looked round the charge room, not a police officer in sight, the men were apparently on their own.

Then in walked the B.T. police dog Storm, "Oh I see now" said the quick thinking Sergeant, we shall have to get one of them."

True to his word, within two weeks an Oldham officer was sent down to Elstree's B.T. Police Dog Training School; supplied with a

police dog and given his first lessons in police dog training by the legendary Terry Shelton ex Metropolitan Police Dog Instructor

and former Naval Marine of great distinction.

The two men had been caught red handed stealing parcels off the deck at Oldham Clegg St Parcel's Depot by Storm.

P.C Walpole the beat Bobby at the Depot, said "You know where the Police Station is, off you go."

Half way up Clegg St, one of them said to the other one, "Don't be a bloody idiot, that is exactly what they want you to

do."

And that is exactly how Oldham police got their very first police dog. Manchester already had police dogs with Inspector Morris

and Sergeant Fred Leigh in charge, they knew Storm very well, as they trained together every week at that time.

Pc Diederik Coetzee Nottinghamshire Police

Originally from Johannesburg, Mr Coetzee joined Notts Police in 1999 after working as a dog handler for the South African city's police force.

Mansfield South beat officer PC Diederik Coetzee, aged 54, is in a critical but stable condition at King’s Mill Hospital following the collision in Blidworth Lane at about 6pm.

He was cycling towards Blidworth when a vehicle struck him from behind. The motorist failed to stop following the collision.

Debris from the scene indicates the vehicle may be metallic dark grey in colour with front-end damage to the bumper, grill and at least one of the lights.

The Force’s Crash Investigation Team is trawling through CCTV footage from the surrounding area and local beat teams are making further enquiries.

Investigating officer Detective Sergeant Ged Hazelwood said: “Blidworth Lane is a poorly illuminated thorough-way but the collision happened during rush hour, when many people were headed home from work.

“PC Coetzee was wearing a high-visibility vest and had his bike lights turned on.

“Did you see what happened? Have you seen a grey car with damage to its front-end? Anyone with any information should contact us.”

Local garages and car repairers are also being urged to be vigilant for a vehicle matching the above description.

Deputy Chief Constable Chris Eyre said: “Local officers are providing support and regular updates to PC Coetzee and his family at this very difficult time. Our thoughts and best wishes are with them.”

Witnesses or anyone with information about the outstanding vehicle are being urged to contact the Crash Investigation team on 101 extension 800 2225 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111

Known locally as "Robocop' Pc Coetzee has an outstanding arrest record.

I, personally, wish him a speedy recovery and hope the offender is quickly brought to justice.

HILDA Wallace knows more than most about the debilitating affects of
Alzheimer's Disease after her husband battled the illness for 12 years.
Dan Wallace, a father and former dog handler for 30 years with
Nottinghamshire Police, lost his fight for life on 29th January - his
wife's birthday.
Since her husband's passing, Hilda and others have continued to raise
money for the Alzheimer's Society and former Chad charity Central Notts
MIND to help raise their profiles and keep the services going.
This week, a new minibus was donated to MIND through the generous
fundraising efforts and officially named after Dan Wallace who also
worked as volunteer bus driver for MIND during his retirement.
"We are honoured as a family that MIND has chosen to dedicate the new
bus that they have just required through donations and fundraising to
Dan by officially naming it Dan the Man," said Hilda.
"Alzheimer's Disease is very individual in how it affects each person,
it is more than just memory loss, it causes total and irrevocable
personality changes."
Dan was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's Disease aged 62 and was
looked after by Hilda with help from staff at MIND, New Outlook and
Mansfield's Alzheimer's Society branch.
"Both MIND and the Alzheimer's Society rely on public generosity through
donations and fundraising," added Hilda.
"Recent cuts in services means that these charities have to work harder
at fundraising so that more local people can be helped."

Retired Police Constable Roy Bertram Burditt who was long serving dog handler in the Leicestershire Constabulary has sadly died (19.08.2011)

Roy would have been known by dog handlers outside of Leicestershire for his many appearances at Regional Police Dog Trials.

I think you should know who was the first ever police dog trainer, he is my uncle Tom Benson, he was called up to the RAF and had trained his dogs he offered them o the RAF but they didn't want them, he then went to the police who not only took the dogs but him aswell. He trained many dogs and men. I am and always will be his proud niece.

MIJ THE POLICE DOG HAS HIS DAY

Mij the sniffer dog is now the most decorated member of the Nottinghamshire Police dog squad after taking home six rosettes at a dog show last weekend (30 to 31 July 2011).

The Springer Spaniel attended the Ged Walker Memorial Dog Show, held at West Park in Long Eaton.

His handler PC Stuart Hazard said: “We already knew Mij was a special dog with some very special skills, but it was great to be able to show him off, as well as raise money for a cause that resonated so keenly with us within the dog section.

“He’s got more decorations than all of us put together now!”

The dog show has been staged for the past nine years in tribute to PC Ged Walker, a Nottinghamshire Police dog handler who died in the line of duty on 9 January 2003 after being fatally injured by a stolen taxi in Bulwell. He died in hospital two days later of serious head injuries.

In December 2003, 26-year-old David Parfitt was convicted of PC Walker’s manslaughter and was sentenced to thirteen years in prison.

Six-year-old Mij, a Specialist Search Dog trained in the detection and the location of narcotics, firearms, and component parts of firearms and ammunition, was proudly led out into the arena for each class by his best friend Robson, the eight-year-old son of PC Hazard.

The pair received rosettes in the following categories: Best Gun Dog, Best Condition, Agility, Junior Handler, Best Six Legs, The Dog the Judge Would Most Like to Take Home and the Waggiest Tail.

Dog handler PC Andy Pickersgill’s daughter Daisy, 11, also won a Junior Handler rosette with seven-year-old operational and firearm support German Shepherd, Blade.

PC Hazard with Mij and PC Pickersgill with Blade also gave the four hundred attendees a demonstration of the dogs’ skills in searching out drugs and weapons, and capturing fleeing offenders

Organiser Jan Wesley, from The Old Park Farm Dog Training School based in Bilborough, said: “The Notts Police dog section always put on a good show for us, but the added novelty of the kids with the two dogs entering the competitions made it a little bit special this year.

“They loved it. They both had lovely smiles on their faces and were very excited before each class. Considering some of the classes had 30 to 40 entrants they did exceptionally well.

“I think we have recruited two more dog lovers and I fully expect them to be at next year’s show.”

In attendance at this year’s show was PC Walker’s wife Tracy, who took home her own rosette in the gun dog category with Cocker Spaniel Tilly.

More than £1,000 was raised during the show, with proceeds split between the Care of Police Survivors (COPS) Foundation, and military charity Help for Heroes.

The mother and sisters of Lance Corporal Liam Tasker, from the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, were also at the show. Twenty-six-year-old LCpl Tasker was killed in Afghanistan on 1 March 2011. His sniffer dog Theo died of a seizure shortly after.

The parents of Lance Corporal Kenneth Rowe were also in attendance. The 24-year-old dog handler, with the Royal Army Veterinary Corps, was killed in Afghanistan on 24 July 2008 alongside his ammunitions and explosives sniffer dog Sasha.

3 Nottinghamshire Police Dog Section Officers being investigated

3 Nottinghamshire Police Dog Section Officers are subject of an internal investigation. 2 of which have been suspended and the 3rd has been transferred to other duties.

This has been subject to 'press' coverage and it has been stated that there has been no allegation of cruelty etc towards the animals under their charge.

The precise nature of the investigation has not been disclosed.

And yet another two Police Dogs die, having been left in an unventilated private vehicle.

This incident, reported to have been at the Metropolitan Police Dog Training Centre, Keston will be seemingly undefendable after a similar incident in Nottinghamshire. Heavily reported, all dog handlers whether Police or not will be aware of the consequences of leaving dogs in cars unattended.

It has been reported that the officer, Sergeant Ian Craven, one of the country's most experienced dog trainers, slashed his wrists when he learnt of their deaths.

A golden Labrador who was left to die in an abandoned building has been commended for helping to keep the streets of Nottinghamshire safe.

Six-year-old Monty and his handler PC Rob Cooke were awarded the Terry Ball Award at the annual Labrador Rescue Ball last month.

The award is given every year to a neglected or abused Labrador who deserves special recognition for their achievements following a particularly difficult start to life.

Monty has been helping to police the county since he was rescued in 2007 when he was found starving to death at a deserted pub.

He’d been there for up to three weeks and had survived by drinking water from a toilet.

He was given a home at the East Midlands Labrador Rescue, where his carers recognised a potential in him to become a crime-fighting police dog.

PC Steve Abbott, a Home Office and ACPO accredited police dog instructor, helped guide Monty through the eight-week training process.

He said: “He certainly had lots issues when he first came to us. He was frightened to be in confined spaces and didn’t trust anyone. But I took the time to show him lots of love, sit with him and make sure he knew he was safe.

“I took him for long walks and I saw that he had a great natural ability and had the potential to do really well – he just needed to get his confidence back again.”

But training was not plain sailing for Monty.

PC Abbott continued: “He was just not getting it at first. But he had such a bad start to life, I was determined he was going to make it.

“So I put in extra time with him and pretty soon, he was not only getting it, he was one of the best we had.”

Monty is able to easily locate a variety of weapons and illegal substances, including heroin, cocaine, amphetamines and cannabis.

Within days of his new job, he had discovered several thousands of pounds worth of cocaine, and his latest find was £3,000 worth of cannabis at a house in Worksop.

Monty lives with his handler PC Cooke and is treated like a member of the family.

PC Cooke said: “He’s spoiled at home and gets lots of love and attention. But he lives to work – that’s what he loves doing the most.

“He’s a loveable rogue and I would not swap him for any other dog in the world. He is a bit boisterous, but if you give him a task, he does it perfectly.

“I am extremely honoured and proud to receive this award, not for me but for Monty because of where he came from and where he is now.”

Sgt Donna Busuttil, from the dog section, said: “The work Steve and Rob have done with Monty cannot be underestimated.

“They make an excellent team and Monty is one of the best working dogs we have ever had in this department.

“We are extremely proud of what they have achieved and undoubtedly make a significant contribution to keeping the streets of Nottinghamshire safe.”

Suffolk Constabulary is hosting the 2011 National Police Dog Trials.

2011 will see the trials being hosted in the Eastern Region for the first time in its 51-year history.

The trials will see the country’s most highly skilled and experienced dog handlers and dogs from police forces across the UK competing for the overall title of ‘National Police Dog Champion'.

Competitors qualify for the competition after progressing through regional trials, which take place in March. The three-day national trials put competitors through tough exercises, which test a wide range of abilities that are used on a daily basis in helping to tackle crime.

It is with sadness that I have heard of the recent death of a former colleague of the Notts Police Dog Section, Hughie Keen.
Hughie began his career at Beeston, Nottingham Traffic Wing and then the Police Dog Section, latterly with his dog Kip, attached to the Drug Squad. He died 2nd September aged 71 years at his home in Portugal.
A great character!
My condolences and those from the Forum go to his wife Linda and the family.

Metropolitan Police Dog Section - Pc Bert Sayers

Newspaper cutting dated 17 September 1954 "PC "Buster" joins Finchley Police.
A new arrival to take up his duties at Finchley police stations is freshly trained, keen as mustard on police work - and answers to the name of "Buster". But he will only respond to one man who knows him very well, because "Buster" is a young golden-brown Alsatian, and the only person he takes orders from is PC Albert Sayers, his handler. They both came from Hendon this week and will work together tackling crime in Finchley.
They were well known locally as they of course were on foot in those days!

After the "Babes in the Wood" case, my Father trained the Met's human remains dogs (called body dogs then!), I came home from school and found pig carcasses in the garage, I even helped him bury a few of them. Also helped him train the dogs to find gun's etc. No one can say my childhood was boring! My Dad trained the dogs that found the bodies (including President Sedat's brother) after the October wars.

Nottinghamshire Police pups need homing

Nottinghamshire Police’s Dog Section is looking for loving homes for five puppies from the force’s in-house dog breeding programme.

They come from the sixth litter to be produced by the scheme, which was set up in 2006 to reduce the cost of the force having to purchase dogs from specialist breeders.

The pups are pedigree German Shepherds from working line European imported stock.

PC Geoff Tordoff said: "Because of the success of the breeding programme, we can’t keep every dog that is born.
Each puppy, all bitches, will cost £500, but they will all be Kennel Club registered and will have had their first inoculations.

Electric training collars

I see that the ban has now been passed in Wales. Another knee jerk reaction by politicians without a proper study, No doubt more dogs will now be destroyed!
I just hope that the rest of the UK sees sense.

Banning the use of the 'electric collar' as a training aid.

I sometimes despair at those who are against the use of the electric collar as a training aid.
I am totally against its 'ban' which is currently being voted upon by politicians in Wales.
In short, I question those who can allegedly totally cure a dog from the ingrained habit of fighting, biting or chasing using 'happy methods', clickers etc etc. It is hard to stop aggression especially if the dog already has a history.
Not everyone can afford the sometimes costly and time consuming professional assistance and invariably the problem dog is taken to the Veterinary for the final cure.
The use of any aid which is quick, effective and prevents possible injuries and death to both human or other animals, surely has its place!
I have seen evidence of most training methods and, in my opinion, the electric collar is an excellant aid if used correctly and as a last resort. I am aware of a number of dogs that are happy, friendly and a pleasure to be with in the company of people, but until a collar was used the owners were at their wits end due to the propensity to fight and attack other dogs. These dogs are still alive and now well behaved, be it in fear or not.
It should not be banned.

Pc Mark Johnson update

Pc Mark Johnson whose dogs died after being left in a car for seven hours in a heatwave had 'forgotten' about them, Nottingham Magistrates heard today.
The prosecution allege that he failed in his responsibility towards the Police Dogs in his care, which led to their sufferring and death.
The Court heard that at the time of this incident Pc Johnson was sufferring from depression and an obssessive disorder.
PC Johnson arrived at work at 6.44am on June 30, 2009, and returned to his dogs at 2.20pm the same day. His car's windows closed and there was no water for the dogs.
Pc Johnson had failed to adopt his normal routine in removing his dogs to a more suitable environment and had forgotten about them.

Result
'Guilty', 6 months conditional discharge and £2,500 costs

Troy and PC Lambert tracked burglar Alan Willetts for two hours as they followed a trail of clothing and discarded property from a burglary in Sutton-in-Ashfield.

Having read the recent article in the Daily Mail regarding the Security Dog Handler whose two dogs died in very similar circumstance as those in Nottinghamshire, I wonder if this has set a precedent? The Court case against Pc Johnson is set to be heard in February.

In 1973 a Dartford policeman/doghandler helped me out. My girlfriend (Gracia) and I had a motorcycle accident coming into London on the A2?. He found me a job at the kennels and helped us out incredibly. I believe his name is Alec Giles. I also believe that his dog, King, won the Kent trials in 1974 or 75.
Is he still around? I believe his daughters should be about 56 and 49 yrs. old.
I just wanted to make contact and let them know we're doing well, a father...Grandfather...Art teacher/fisherman in Alaska.

Strathclyde Police Dogs

According to the BBC news, Strathclyde Police have said that from 2010 new shift patterns and better ways of working would allow it to cut the number of dogs and handlers by half. The officers affected will be able to redeploy to other areas of the force. They will also be offered the chance to keep their dogs.
Any surplus dogs will either be sold to the public or to other police forces throughout the UK.
I dare not publish my views and as for selling police dogs to the public, then I despair.

Civillian Working Dog Trials

Pc Mark Edgar, Dorset Police, was recently fined £255 at the local Magistrates Court after admitting causing uneccessary suffering to his Police Dog 'Hax' by hanging it by its lead when forcing it over a 5' obstacle in training.

Pc Edgar is no longer a handler.

Whilst I do not defend or condone this Officers actions, I have always found this exercise, used at both Police Dog Trials and Civillian Working Trials, to serve no purpose. Numerous injuries have been caused to dogs, even when trained properly. Dislocated shoulders etc. There has always been call to replace this with the 'A' frame, more commonly seen at Dog Agility Events.

Case against Nottinghamshire Police Dog Handler

The case of police dog handler, Mark Johnson, accused of allegedly leaving two of his German Shepherds to die in the back of his car his car, was today adjourned until November.
He did not appear at a hearing at Nottingham Magistrates' Court this afternoon, having been declared unfit to attend.

A series of Palestine pictures which shows all the different departments of the Palestine Police. Shown are the Mounted Branch, Camel Corps, Port & Marine, Dog Section, CID, Armoured Mobile Force, British Section, Palestine Section (comprised of both Jewish & Arabs) and goodness knows what else. They are shown on parade at the Mt. Scopus Depot. The pictures were taken around 1943.

At the end of the British Mandate (May 1948) the Police Force was evacuated out, just prior to them leaving the remaining handlers had to shoot all the dogs that were left.

Picture below shows British Inspector Jack Ritchie, British Sgt Bill Warner & British Sgt Bill Cumming. Bill Warner was the first OC of the Kenya Dog Section in 1948, Bill Cumming succeeded him in 1962. Warner, Cumming and another handler Angus Montgomery went to Nairobi in late 1948 and established the Kenya Police Dog Section. They were joined by another Palestine Police handler Donald Fraser in 1953.

The third reunion of the North East Dog Handlers is due to take place on the 10th of October 2009 at 7.30pm at The Ramada Jarvis Hotel, Wetherby. There was an attendance last year of about 30 men from South, West and North Yorks with Humberside, Durham and Northumberland also in attendance.

In the light of the recent incident another Force has taken the initiative to bring about some good news.
Police dogs are being retired on their own "pensions" and "health plans" by the Cambridgeshire force, they are paying for the food, vet bills and kennelling costs during an animal's retirement.

According to figures, Nottinghamshire Police were underspent in the last financial year.

A Notts police officer whose dogs died in last month's heatwave is to face legal action and has been suspended by the force.
The German Shepherds died after allegedly being left in the handler's car at Notts Police's headquarters in Arnold on June 30.
An RSPCA spokesperson said: "The RSPCA can confirm that following the deaths of two police dogs in Nottinghamshire on 30 June, legal proceedings will be brought against a Nottinghamshire police officer for causing unnecessary suffering to the two animals."

Part of the introduction to my book 'With Courage and Trust' was the dedication to my wife, Diane, who has suffered years of dogging by my side, be it in rain, wind, hail or snow. (translated to mean standing by my side at Working Trials etc)However I have since learned that 'dogging' is now something completely different and this was pointed out to me by a young man in my office, who had purchased my book. It has particular reference to Thieves Wood and is described as:(the Internet translation)Dogging is a predominantly British activity that involves outdoor exhibitionism in car-parks, wooded areas and the like. The term dogging originated in the early Seventies to describe men who spied on couples having sex outdoors. These men would 'dog' the couples' every move in an effort to watch them. When the swinging scene discovered that open-air sex has its own special thrill they began meeting in car-parks, and the doggers found a new and rich supply of voyeuristic fun. Moreover, the doggers soon realised that these couples were actively encouraging them to watch, even performing for them, and sometimes allowing them to join in.
We certainly had no connection! embarrassed or what?

National Police Dog Trials 2009

Nottinghamshire Police Dog handler PC Dave Buckley, pictured with his police dog Chas, scored 911 points out of 1,000 to win the competition at Leeds Castle in Kent.

The trials were held between 23 and 26 April 2009 at the prestigious Leeds Castle in Kent, former home of King Henry VIII.

27 dogs and handlers from 23 forces first had to compete at local and regional events to qualify for the right to enter.

Bob Collins, who has made leather equipment for police dogs at his workshop in Recreation Road since 1938, was given a chief constable’s commendation at a recent ceremony for his work.
“This is the only job I have ever had, it is a family trade. I still do 10 hours days, but it is a privilege to work for the police,” said Mr Collins.

My name is Leonard Rayner and I served with the Grimsby Borough Police Force from 1953 until 1983 after its transition through Lincolnshire Police into Humberside Police. I became GY Boro's first Police Dog Handler in 1962 and served in that capacity until 1967. My initial training as a dog handler was at Preston, Lancashire who supplied my dog "Grimpol Tex". During my period as a dog handler I entered four N0.3 District Regional Trials and on each occasion qualified for the National Trials finally winning this title in 1966 with a subsequent appearance on BBC TV's Blue Peter. I also entered Leeds Police Dog Championship Show at Roundhay Park winning on each occasion in 1963, 1964 and 1965. Anyone who remembers me and Grimpol Tex please do not hesitate to get in touch particularly Ray Woods, Dennis Scott and Geoff Plumber who were all ex. Notts County handlers. I very recently have been in touch with Alan Pickles ex. Bradford City handler and was delighted to talk over old times.
