Dog trials

Part of the introduction to my book 'With Courage and Trust' was the dedication to my wife, Diane, who has suffered years of dogging by my side, be it in rain, wind, hail or snow. (translated to mean standing by my side at Working Trials etc)However I have since learned that 'dogging' is now something completely different and this was pointed out to me by a young man in my office, who had purchased my book. It has particular reference to Thieves Wood and is described as:(the Internet translation)Dogging is a predominantly British activity that involves outdoor exhibitionism in car-parks, wooded areas and the like. The term dogging originated in the early Seventies to describe men who spied on couples having sex outdoors. These men would 'dog' the couples' every move in an effort to watch them. When the swinging scene discovered that open-air sex has its own special thrill they began meeting in car-parks, and the doggers found a new and rich supply of voyeuristic fun. Moreover, the doggers soon realised that these couples were actively encouraging them to watch, even performing for them, and sometimes allowing them to join in.
We certainly had no connection! embarrassed or what?

National Police Dog Trials 2009

Nottinghamshire Police Dog handler PC Dave Buckley, pictured with his police dog Chas, scored 911 points out of 1,000 to win the competition at Leeds Castle in Kent.

The trials were held between 23 and 26 April 2009 at the prestigious Leeds Castle in Kent, former home of King Henry VIII.

27 dogs and handlers from 23 forces first had to compete at local and regional events to qualify for the right to enter.

Bob Collins, who has made leather equipment for police dogs at his workshop in Recreation Road since 1938, was given a chief constable’s commendation at a recent ceremony for his work.
“This is the only job I have ever had, it is a family trade. I still do 10 hours days, but it is a privilege to work for the police,” said Mr Collins.

A Dog's Prayer

A Dog's Prayer Beth Norman Harris

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to the bitter elements. And I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth.

Though had you no home, I would rather follow through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshipper.

Keep my dish filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst.

Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger. And, beloved master, should the great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you.

Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest - and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.

Grieve not for me

Grieve Not For Me
Author - Unknown

GRIEVE NOT FOR ME FOR IT HAS BEEN ORDAINED,
THAT MY JOURNEY HERE BE SHORT.
GRIEVE NOT FOR ME FOR MY LOYAL PRESENCE
WILL EVER REMAIN IN YOUR HEART.
I WAS SENT TO BE A GUARDIAN
FOR THE GUARDIANS OF LAW IN BLUE
A FEARLESS, NOBLE PROTECTOR
WITH A BOND THAT FEW CAN CONSTRUE.
WITH CHARACTER UNSHAKABLE,
AND SENSES THAT ARE WELL HEIGHTENED,
I WAS SENT TO BE A DEFENDER,
SO THAT YOUR BURDEN HERE WOULD BE LIGHTENED,
GRIEVE NOT FOR ME FOR IN HEAVENLY BLUE
OUR REUNION DAY WILL COME.
GRIEVE NOT FOR ME FOR AS PARTNERS AGAIN,
WE WILL DEFEND A GREATER KINGDOM.

Police Dog Handlers and Firearms

I was recently asked why Police Dog Handlers were not armed in firearm situations.
The above was captured by a press photographer, a good few years ago, and is self evidencing with the 'cocked' 38 revolver.

Police Dog Handler

POLICE DOG HANDLER

A track to be followed, of which no trace can be seen.
A person still hiding, where everyone's been.
A child, lost, who cannot be traced.
Property hidden, or something mis-placed,
Searches made in vain that another must do.
A runner, criminal athlete, too fast to pursue.

Violence, a riot, too few on the ground.
A place must be guarded, not enough to surround.
Displays to be fixed, getting artistes a pain.
Public relations - aah, an animal's domain.
Places to visit and tales to tell.
Advice on dogs!! an officeman's hell.

What is the cry?, with all shouts to the van.
How on earth can we do it?
"Get the Dogman".
