Pc Mark Johnson update

Pc Mark Johnson whose dogs died after being left in a car for seven hours in a heatwave had 'forgotten' about them, Nottingham Magistrates heard today.
The prosecution allege that he failed in his responsibility towards the Police Dogs in his care, which led to their sufferring and death.
The Court heard that at the time of this incident Pc Johnson was sufferring from depression and an obssessive disorder.
PC Johnson arrived at work at 6.44am on June 30, 2009, and returned to his dogs at 2.20pm the same day. His car's windows closed and there was no water for the dogs.
Pc Johnson had failed to adopt his normal routine in removing his dogs to a more suitable environment and had forgotten about them.

Result
'Guilty', 6 months conditional discharge and £2,500 costs

I will make no further comment.

  1. It is always interesting how we make excuses for people who are cruel to animals. Animals have little or no rights, there is no one, who has the dogs interest at heart, who can take Judge Devas' ruling and sentencing of Johnson to court and challenge the sentence; other than perhaps the breeder of the dogs.

The Judge was unfair in his judgement of Johnson whose lack of attention to duty, lack of focus on the job lead to the excruciating death of the dogs. Claiming depression was a ridiculous excuse [most people do not believe him, he obviously has a good lawyer] and if his depression is so bad then why was he working, did he write any speed tickets, because if he did, then people can challenge his sanity at the time and get the speed conviction quashed. And why is he still allowed to be in charge of a dog? If this crime, because it is a crime, had been done by a member of the public then that person would not be allowed to ever own a dog, or at the very least have to wait five, maybe ten years before being allowed to do so.

Devas is obviously incompetent and oblivious as to how people feel about animal cruelty; he should walk the streets more and talk to people to get their opinions. Indeed, it wouldn't do any harm for all judges to do this as more often than not their sentences and opinions are unrelated to public opinion, public expectations and public good.

  2. In a recent case a dog handler working for a Security Firm was jailed for leaving his dogs to die in a hot van. Need I add anything?
