Nottinghamshire Police pups need homing

Nottinghamshire Police’s Dog Section is looking for loving homes for five puppies from the force’s in-house dog breeding programme.

They come from the sixth litter to be produced by the scheme, which was set up in 2006 to reduce the cost of the force having to purchase dogs from specialist breeders.

The pups are pedigree German Shepherds from working line European imported stock.

PC Geoff Tordoff said: "Because of the success of the breeding programme, we can’t keep every dog that is born.
Each puppy, all bitches, will cost £500, but they will all be Kennel Club registered and will have had their first inoculations.

Anyone who thinks they can give the puppies a home should contact Nottinghamshire Police Press Office on 0300 300 9999 ext 800 2080.

Electric training collars

I see that the ban has now been passed in Wales. Another knee jerk reaction by politicians without a proper study, No doubt more dogs will now be destroyed!
I just hope that the rest of the UK sees sense.

Banning the use of the 'electric collar' as a training aid.

I sometimes despair at those who are against the use of the electric collar as a training aid.
I am totally against its 'ban' which is currently being voted upon by politicians in Wales.
In short, I question those who can allegedly totally cure a dog from the ingrained habit of fighting, biting or chasing using 'happy methods', clickers etc etc. It is hard to stop aggression especially if the dog already has a history.
Not everyone can afford the sometimes costly and time consuming professional assistance and invariably the problem dog is taken to the Veterinary for the final cure.
The use of any aid which is quick, effective and prevents possible injuries and death to both human or other animals, surely has its place!
I have seen evidence of most training methods and, in my opinion, the electric collar is an excellant aid if used correctly and as a last resort. I am aware of a number of dogs that are happy, friendly and a pleasure to be with in the company of people, but until a collar was used the owners were at their wits end due to the propensity to fight and attack other dogs. These dogs are still alive and now well behaved, be it in fear or not.
It should not be banned.

Pc Mark Johnson update

Pc Mark Johnson whose dogs died after being left in a car for seven hours in a heatwave had 'forgotten' about them, Nottingham Magistrates heard today.
The prosecution allege that he failed in his responsibility towards the Police Dogs in his care, which led to their sufferring and death.
The Court heard that at the time of this incident Pc Johnson was sufferring from depression and an obssessive disorder.
PC Johnson arrived at work at 6.44am on June 30, 2009, and returned to his dogs at 2.20pm the same day. His car's windows closed and there was no water for the dogs.
Pc Johnson had failed to adopt his normal routine in removing his dogs to a more suitable environment and had forgotten about them.

Result
'Guilty', 6 months conditional discharge and £2,500 costs

I will make no further comment.

A Nottinghamshire Police dog has died just days after being praised by a judge for tracking down a burglar.

Troy and PC Lambert tracked burglar Alan Willetts for two hours as they followed a trail of clothing and discarded property from a burglary in Sutton-in-Ashfield.
The 5 year old dog died from a spleen condition and a tumour on the heart

This has been attacked as a waste of money and Police time, being purely a PR exercise. I believe anything that encourages community enagement should be used and is of value, especially in the face of bad publicity which always makes headlines.

Having read the recent article in the Daily Mail regarding the Security Dog Handler whose two dogs died in very similar circumstance as those in Nottinghamshire, I wonder if this has set a precedent? The Court case against Pc Johnson is set to be heard in February.

It is nice to see that in Sonora California a specific offence is on their statute, whilst in the UK offenders were charged (as far as my memory goes) with Cruelty or 'criminal damage'(would you believe)

Dartford Police Dog Handler

In 1973 a Dartford policeman/doghandler helped me out. My girlfriend (Gracia) and I had a motorcycle accident coming into London on the A2?. He found me a job at the kennels and helped us out incredibly. I believe his name is Alec Giles. I also believe that his dog, King, won the Kent trials in 1974 or 75.
Is he still around? I believe his daughters should be about 56 and 49 yrs. old.
I just wanted to make contact and let them know we're doing well, a father...Grandfather...Art teacher/fisherman in Alaska.

Strathclyde Police Dogs

According to the BBC news, Strathclyde Police have said that from 2010 new shift patterns and better ways of working would allow it to cut the number of dogs and handlers by half. The officers affected will be able to redeploy to other areas of the force. They will also be offered the chance to keep their dogs.
Any surplus dogs will either be sold to the public or to other police forces throughout the UK.
I dare not publish my views and as for selling police dogs to the public, then I despair.
