In memory of Dan we, the Wallace family are looking to raise funds to help to keep a day centre running that because of cuts is being closed down. Dan attended this day centre for several years after his diagnosis. It is a unique place where early onset Alzheimer’s and dementia related sufferers can go giving carers much needed respite. Because of the demand for this service an age limit of 65 yrs was imposed. There was no where else suitable for people like Dan to go who were still physically able but needed help to continue to function as normally as possible – so the seed was sown - Open Door 1 was the proposed answer.
Open Door 1 will serve the local community of Mansfield & Ashfield. The staff who will run it have the expert and professional qualifications to help preserve the dignity of sufferers of this dreadful illness by keeping them active and stimulated. When Dan attended the day centre he always acted as if he had gone to work there. This was who Dan was he much more comfortable giving than receiving – despite his illness he never lost the need to be ‘useful’ and I witnessed the friendship and help and support he gave to sufferers like himself many times.
I know lots of you have supported us before when our daughter Jos walked the Coast to Coast in 2008. We were able because of your help to give a sizable donations to both Charities MIND & The Alzheimer’s Society. The next venture Jos and her friend Julia are undertaking is Hadrian’s Wall. They propose to take up the challenge to complete it in just 4 days. They will begin the walk on Father’s Day, Sunday, 17th June from Wallsend and finish on Wednesday 21st June, at Bowness a total of 84 miles. I will transport them to the start of the walk accompanied by Grant.
If you feel that you would like to support Jos & Julia the details for sponsoring are attached.
Thank you in anticipation of your help and support once more in Dan’s memory.
Kind Regards,
The Wallace Family.
