Police Constable Tony Herson (Cambridgeshire)
Whilst searching the internet, what a pleasure it was to find this picture of Tony. In the 90's he was on an Initial Police Dog Training Course with the Nottinghamshire Police. He was part of a rival Course to that of my own and we engaged in a 'fun boxing tournament' at one of our training venues, trainers included! Pc John Smith (Police Dog Wesson) was a very competent boxer who took on 'all comers' with one hand. All punches were thrown at him, with no hits and each of us too tired to carry on after 2 rounds uninjured, apart from pride, it was Tony who head butted John's gloved fist and got a beautiful black eye. As I remember, Tony was once an Ambulanceman so he didn't complain. I still have the video, what a laugh.

I remember it well, the event took place at Lowdham Borstal...I also remember Dave Brown giving clear instructions to his opponent Pc John Smith that he must not under any circumstances hit the instructor on the nose or he would fail the course ! and when John Wharvell was hit with a body punch it made his fat wallet jump out of his shirt pocket.
ReplyDeleteAs for Tonys black eye, I think he must have had soft skin,he bruised too easy like a peach. As soon as Pete Joyce saw the black eye the 'offender' was summoned to the office for a bollocking...."It was Queensberry Rules Inspector"
I have some photos of Dave Brown with the gloves on...with that nose he must have done a bit of boxing !
Good times.
Very sad to hear of the death of ex Inspector Pete Joyce.
